Things to know for SAS beginners: These are the basic parts of a SAS program : Epoch Research Institute(http://epochresearchinstitute.com)

Here are some of the basic parts of SAS program for all those SAS users who are beginner in SAS field should have a quick look over it.

All the beginners might be aware about the two building blocks in the SAS program: DATA ‘steps’ and PROC (procedures).  Let us discuss as shown below:
  •  There is no requirement for SAS procedures for execution of data step before them
  •  OPTIONS to manage the appearance of output and log files.
  • You manipulate the data i.e. creating variables, recoding etc in DATA step. The data step sets the format as per the requirement of SAS i.e. in a format that SAS can understand
  •  A SAS data file can have upto three parts. Headers, matrix of data values and indexes. Now headers contain the descriptive information of dataset contents. Indexes to be saved in separate physical files. But still SAS consider indexes as a part of data file. If index is present, it should not be removed from the directory where the data file exists in.
  •   In SAS, the execution of the data step is done statement by statement and observation by observation.
  •  Missing values are denoted by period (“,”). Most operators circulate missing values. Let’s take an example. If there are three values say, (v1, v2, v3) and v2 is missing for observation 10, then missing value for observation 10 will be obtained by creating sum total of all three values i.e. (v1, v2, v3)
  • For the sum of non-missing values, use SUM function: total=sum (v1, v2, v3). But take  a note that for comparison operators, SAS treats missing values as infinitely negative numbers.
  • To run statistics on data sets. PROCs are used. In turn it can generate datasets as output. Output data sets are extremely useful
  •    For DATA step and PROC boundary In windows, the procedures must end with a “RUN;” statement.
  •   In UNIX, it is not necessary to end procedure with “RUN;” statement as SAS reads the entire program in the earlier stage itself before execution. It determines DATA step boundaries when it stumble upon the PROC and it knows the boundary of PROC when followed by another PROC or DATA step

Today I want to make clear regarding the opportunities that existing after pursuing for SAS training. I won’t go round and round, simply am coming to the main point.


Initially let me initiate with the companies. Once you complete B Pharm and if you prefer for a job or would go for M Pharm degree, then after completion you will land your professional job only with Pharmaceutical companies. On the other hand, after completing B Pharm, If you go for handy experience and pursue for SAS training, then the world is all yours. You will land your professional career in Pharmaceutical companies along with various Clinical research organizations and SAS consultants. Next concern is regarding opportunities. If you hunt for a job on the bases of B Pharm or M Pharm, you will avail with the opportunities such as Marketing, Manufacturing, Q.A./Q.C.(CR), Medical Transcription. Whereas there are abundant opportunities after SAS training. You will avail with job profiles such as SAS Programmer, SAS Clinical Researchers & Bio statisticians, SAS Clinical trial Programmers, Clinical Data manager, Assistant SAS programmer, SAS Data validation specialist, SAS Quality Assurance specialist and SAS Project manager.

But the question rises – what about Clinical SAS programmers? Clinical SAS programmers are neither software developers nor statisticians. But they play a crucial role in the industry in filling a distinctive void.

  We will define the three factors that can influence the programmer’s motivation. These covers three categories i.e. the working environment for the programmers, recognition and the team with which you are involved. In addition, Clinical SAS programmers are not the emblematic software developers whereas software developers have the computer science degree or other relative background or would surely have a least interest in programming world. This is not the case with the Clinical SAS programming. Clinical SAS programmers are derived from various backgrounds and in general they accidentally fall into the programming concepts. As a result we cannot group them in a single homogeneous group. As an alternative we have to classify them into different categories based upon their strength and weakness: The grouping can be likewise
  1.  The scientist 
  1.  The statiscian
  1. Developer 
  1. Programmer
The projects should be assigned based upon their aspects and this will ultimately motivate them in programming world. Now let’s focus on the factors that enable and inspire the Clinical SAS programmers in the programming world

Working environment:
Being Clinical SAS programmer itself is a complex mental activity and under such circumstances, the managers really need to create an environment that allows the programmers to groom and increase the thinking power. A programmer has to manage number of files and these files may contain complexities that need to be managed in order to generate an accurate output in a timely manner. If there is any sort of distraction, then it can cause major effect on the concentration and programmer’s ability to get the work done and at last losing the temperament and leading to frustration resulting into loss of motivation. The prevention measures should be taken in order to keep the programmer from being distracted and loosing focus on their work. Following factors can prove to be useful
  •  Hardware that easily retrieves the results quickly for the user
  • The servers and the networks should be reliable. Suppose you are in the midst of   developing a complex piece of code and all of sudden the programmer finds that the server is crashed. This will easily make the programmer frustrated.
  •   Even the workplace matters alot. It should be suitable, privacy should be maintained along with silence

We have already discussed last week regarding what are the requirements to become SAS programmer? Now let’s come to the other different units of CRO and groups as well as individuals that you will be working with. They are Site management, data management, project management, quality assurance, medical writing and information technology. Now let’s discuss them:

Site management – The main purpose behind site management is usually to recruit doctors at clinics and train the staffs. The site management can be your responsibilities by helping to get the data go through clean and voluntarily usable form.

Data management – Usually the statistical programmer closely works with data management team. The core function of the data management team is to design case report form, data entry, data cleaning, data quality control, data coding, database design and setup and providing the clinical trial data for analysis. Finally the data management team will provide the statistical programmer with the data by way of relational data management system     and then it can be imported to SAS. It proves to be an extra advantageous if the statistical programmer is provided with well cleaned and coded clinical database that would ultimately save the programmer’s time.

Project management – The project manager provides with an oversight of the clinical trials. A project manager usually works with laboratories, pharmaceutical companies and CROs. The main exchange between the project manager and statistical programmer is the project manager has to work with programmer over the course of the clinical trials

Quality assurance – The main goal of the quality assurance team is to meet the standards as well as maintain the regulatory standards of the organization. Internal audits are also performed in order to check the regulatory standards at the organization. At last, the quality assurance team maintains the SOPs i.e. standard operating procedures

Medical writing – The purpose and tasks of the medical writers is to create documents for the organization. They usually help in writing the clinical study reports for FDA. They also write for NDA submission. On various occasions the medical writing group will request for additional data as they accumulate their reporting.

Information technology – The role for IT is generally to maintain the system infrastructure, maintenance and general computer help desk support. They will be also performing with some level of software development. You have to work with IT section for SAS configuration management and installation and desktop publishing. You have to work with an external IT staff in regard to information exchange technologies like FTP.

We all are absolutely aware about the fact that the first impression is the last impression. This thought also works when it comes to attend the interviews and succeeding. We just have one opportunity to prove ourselves to make a good impression and this is undoubtedly true. I would say that the programmer must be well prepared and should advance himself with all the aspects of the interview before facing it. The resume should be well mannered and prepared in such means that it would highlight all the important SAS skills that can draw the attention of hiring manager. Now let’s go through some of the major points that can help you to prepare for the interviews mentally

As we all know that during the interview hours you have to face both the sectional questions “Technical and as well Non-technical”. When you are asked any question, answer it with your best ability and prove that you have in-depth idea regarding the same. But at the same moment, one of the foremost point that I need to clarify is that simply say no to the question if you aren’t aware or don’t know the answer. Just don’t try to bluff with meaningless answers. It can result into damage and there are chances that you might not succeed in interview. Still the best way is to take a sound breathe, take your time and think for a while before answering a question. 

Interviewers sometimes derive the questions from your resume itself. So make a best possible practice to review your resume carefully before it is handed over to interviewer. There are chances that you might also be asked to prove the task and records that you have included in the resume. So simply don’t get panic. Instead try to sort the task in the best possible manner.

If I say about SAS, SAS is a very rich programming environment and it’s not so easy to know everything in detail at initial stage. So I would recommend you to thoroughly prepare the basics and go for the questions that are frequently asked. Let me make it simpler for you by introducing the basics that may prove beneficial for you. There are possibilities that you might face the questions included in these topics that are mentioned below:
  •       The fundamentals of data steps. It may include the merging, arrays, data vector
  •       The basics of PROC. It includes SORT, MEAN, FREQ etc
  •       Regarding macros. It includes the type of parameters, scope and syntax
  •      Commenting styles
There is still lot more but this are the basics. Take a note that this questions will be asked within the perspective of a new job. If the job requirement is related to database, then the candidate must possess sound knowledge of SQL. Similarly if it is with respect to application developer, then the candidate must possess the knowledge of SAS Macro

Whenever your interview is finally concluded, I would suggest you to present a thank you note for an interviewer including a brief statement thanking interviewer for their time and how you are prove to be suitable for the position.

In this post I would share the views on how is the life of the SAS statistical programmer in the pharmaceutical industry. So as we all know that there is range of jobs available in the pharmaceutical industry that allows the opportunity to travel as well as work.

Being a statistical programmer, the mainstream of your tasks that are performed in the pharmaceutical industry is using SAS. People possessing SAS skills gets widen opportunities. There are many universities that provide and educate with SAS courses. But still, if you want to become confident and convinced, I would suggest you for job training. With an ease, you can transfer your SAS programming skills while working in pharmaceutical companies and switching to the next if provided with and opportunity. Some of the SAS programmers accidentally fall in the pharmaceutical industry. But later on they acquire the specialist SAS skills finally leading them to the excellent progress in career.

Many of the pharmaceutical companies as well as contract research organizations (CRO’s) are well developed employee oriented and they offer their employees the training opportunities. They really encourage and egg on their employees to attend the conferences (programming conferences) around as per the location. The employee can be motivated by learning the new concepts in medical areas. The daily tasks include SAS programming, derived datasets, producing summary tables, figures and listings.

Due to this it becomes prominent to undertake a quality control checking strictly under the government regulatory guidance.
